The Origins of Bisindo and Pusbisindo

On 1 August 1994, the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture issued Decree No. 0190/P/1994 to develop the Kamus Sistem Isyarat Bahasa Indonesia (SIBI), the Indonesian Sign System Dictionary. This decision sparked disagreement between the Deaf community—including the Gerakan untuk Kesejahteraan Tuna Rungu Indonesia (Gerkatin)—and the SIBI drafting team.

The issue was formally discussed during Gerkatin's 6th National Congress in Bali in 2002. As a result of the congress, the name Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia (Bisindo) was officially adopted to recognize and preserve Indonesia's natural sign language.

To strengthen the recognition of sign language as a language in its own right, Gerkatin began collaborating with the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia. During Gerkatin's National Congress in Makassar in 2006, Deaf representatives from across Indonesia also called for the establishment of a dedicated institution to support sign language research and development.

As a result, the Indonesian Sign Language Center (Pusbisindo) was established on 28 February 2009 under the auspices of the Central Executive Board of Gerkatin.

As the organization continued to grow, Pusbisindo officially became an independent foundation. It was legally recognized by the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights under Registration No. AHU-0002703.AH.01.04.Tahun 2024 on 16 February 2024.

Chairperson of Pusbisindo

Holds a Master's degree in Engineering from Atma Jaya University Yogyakarta and currently works as an estimator in the construction industry.

Joined Pusbisindo in 2018 as Central Treasurer, where he played a key role in strengthening the organization's financial management.

He currently serves as Chairperson of Pusbisindo for the 2025–2030 term.

Pusbisindo Branch Leadership

Pusbisindo has established branches across 16 provinces in Indonesia. Each branch is led by a dedicated leadership team responsible for organizing and delivering Bisindo programs and sign language classes within their local community.
